The Imo State Government recently carried out a decisive operation to demolish a notorious criminal hideout in Nekede, a suburb of Owerri, the state capital.

This bold move is part of the government’s efforts to rid the state of crime and ensure public safety

The hideout, located at Nekede Number One, was suspected to be a base for armed robbery and gruesome organ harvesting activities.

Residents in the vicinity had allegedly endured months of fear due to the building’s association with underworld elements.

The government, determined to tackle insecurity, launched the operation to dismantle the hideout.

The demolition took place on July 8, 2025, under the oversight of government security personnel and task force agents.

Several suspects were apprehended during the raid, with preliminary investigations ongoing to determine the extent of their involvement.

The Imo State Government reaffirmed its commitment to making Imo safe for residents, investors, and visitors alike. “Our government will not allow any part of the state to become a breeding ground for evil,” a unit member stated.

This demolition is part of a broader campaign by Governor Hope Uzodimma’s administration to restore security and public confidence in state institutions.

The government has conducted similar crackdowns in other parts of the state, drawing commendation from security stakeholders and the general public.

Residents in the area expressed relief as the bulldozers arrived and demolished the compound.

Many had endured sleepless nights due to the activities of the criminals, and the demolition has given them back their peace.

The government’s efforts aim to create a safe and secure environment for all citizens.

Hon. Nze Chinasa Nwaneri, the Governor’s Special Adviser on Monitoring and Compliance, emphasized that the government would continue to uncover and dismantle criminal hideouts.

“This is one of many criminal hideouts we will continue to uncover and dismantle.

This place was a hub for terror and drug-related operations,” Nwaneri said, highlighting the government’s determination to eliminate crime”.

The Imo State Government’s demolition of the criminal hideout in Nekede demonstrates its commitment to public security and its determination to tackle insecurity.

With ongoing operations and a renewed effort to restore law and order, the state is taking significant steps towards achieving safety and progress for the state.

According to a report, the site had been monitored after several intelligence reports connected it to violent offences, including organized robberies, drug trafficking, and alleged ritualistic killings involving human organs.

“This location was not just a criminal den; it was a grave threat to public safety and human dignity,” said an official involved in the operation.

“Our government will not allow any part of the state to become a breeding ground for evil,” the unit member said.

Residents in the vicinity had allegedly endured months of fear, as the building concealed criminals and functioned as a gathering place for underworld elements.

An Observer during the demolition exercise recounted moments of relief as the bulldozers arrived and demolished the compound.

“I can finally sleep with my two eyes closed,” said one local resident who asked not to be named.

“We’ve known for long that something very dark was happening there. We thank the state government for taking this action.”

Preliminary investigations are ongoing, and several suspects were apprehended during the raid. The government assured residents that a full-scale investigation will follow, and all those involved in the criminal enterprise would be brought to justice.
