As political permutations ahead of the 2027 general elections intensify, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, has delivered a stern message to former Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi.

According to Diaspora digital media (DDM) Onanuga warned that any alliance between Obi and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar would not yield the same overwhelming public enthusiasm witnessed during the 2023 presidential election.

Speaking during an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time on Thursday, July 10, 2025, Onanuga claimed that Obi’s “blind followership” from 2023 will not be replicated if he plays second fiddle to Atiku in 2027.

“If Peter Obi allies with Atiku in 2027, he will not get the blind followership he received in 2023.

“It will not happen because he wants to be president and they want him to be vice president,” Onanuga stated.

The presidential aide dismissed any perceived threat to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), arguing that Tinubu’s record in office would secure his re-election.

“President Tinubu’s achievements in office will speak for him,” he asserted.

This statement comes in the wake of a new opposition coalition backed by prominent political figures, including Obi and Atiku, which recently adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its platform.

The move is seen by many observers as an attempt to mount a united front against the APC in 2027.

Both Obi and Atiku have hinted at running for the presidency again, with negotiations reportedly ongoing regarding a possible joint ticket or power-sharing agreement under the new coalition.

However, Onanuga accused the opposition of “jumping the gun,” insisting that the ruling APC does not see them as a serious challenge.

“They are just trying their luck and playing permutations,” he added.

The Obidient Movement, a vast and largely youth-driven support base that championed Peter Obi’s 2023 presidential bid, has responded with strong online pushback, rejecting claims that their loyalty can be undermined or transferred.

Political analysts believe the battle for 2027 is already shaping up to be fierce and unpredictable, especially if opposition parties succeed in consolidating into a formidable electoral bloc.

While Tinubu’s camp banks on incumbency and achievements, the opposition’s strategy appears focused on unity and national dissatisfaction over governance.

Whether these coalitions can shift voter loyalty or reshape the political landscape remains a critical question as 2027 draws closer.
