Former Imo State Governor, Emeka Ihedioha, has called on Northern elites to rally behind Labour Party’s Peter Obi as a consensus presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections.
Ihedioha described Obi as a charismatic, humble, and widely loved leader across Nigeria, who possesses the vision, empathy, and intellect required to tackle the country’s deep-rooted problems.
Ihedioha believes Obi has the kind of leadership qualities needed to restore Nigeria’s lost glory, citing his integrity, vision, and commitment to serving the nation.
Obi has pledged to serve just one term, and Ihedioha trusts that he will honor this promise, signaling a new beginning for Nigeria
Ihedioha emphasizes that leadership should be about presenting credible alternatives grounded in ideas, strategy, and substance, rather than forming alliances solely to unseat the ruling party.
Obi’s popularity transcends regional boundaries, with many Nigerians seeing him as a viable alternative to traditional politicians.
Obi has been focusing on critical issues such as education, security, and economic development, which resonates with many Nigerians.
Some critics argue that Obi’s support base is limited, and he may face challenges in winning votes outside his home region.
The 2027 presidential election will be highly competitive, with multiple candidates vying for support from various regions and political parties.
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition has been exploring options for a strong presidential candidate, with some leaders advocating for Obi’s emergence.
There have been discussions about a potential alliance between Obi and other prominent Northern politicians, including Atiku Abubakar, to unseat the incumbent president in 2027.
Speaking during a recent high-level political meeting in Abuja, Ihedioha described Obi as “charismatic, humble, and widely loved across Nigeria.
He added that Obi represents the kind of leadership needed to restore the country’s lost glory.
“Obi is not just popular, he is a man of integrity with the kind of vision, empathy, and intellect required to solve Nigeria’s deep-rooted problems.
“He has pledged to serve just one term. As a gentleman, he will honour that promise,” Ihedioha stated.
The former governor noted that Obi’s emergence as the party’s flag bearer would signal a new beginning for Nigeria, stressing that leadership should not be about forming alliances just to unseat the ruling party, but about presenting credible alternatives grounded in ideas, strategy, and substance.
He called on Northern leaders to prioritise unity and national interest over ethnic or political divides.
He noted that, “Nigeria needs a president for all Nigerians; one who can tackle insecurity, poverty, unemployment, and the failing health and education systems”.
Taking a swipe at those who enable poor governance, Ihedioha reminded that political indifference, tribalism, and blind loyalty only serve to entrench corruption and suffering.
“Whether knowingly or unknowingly, those who support bad governance are complicit in Nigeria’s underdevelopment,” he stressed.
Describing Obi as a “nightmare to the APC,” Ihedioha noted that the ADC has a historic opportunity to give Nigerians the change they earnestly desire.
