A diaspora-based group, Concerned Citizens of Igbo Nation in Diaspora (CCIND), has called on Southeastern communities to establish hunters’ associations as a proactive step to combat rising terrorist and bandit attacks in the region.
Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathered that the appeal was made in an open letter signed by the group’s spokesperson, Emeka Livingstone, and made available to journalists on Monday in Abuja.
According to Livingstone, the security situation in the Southeast, covering Ebonyi, Enugu, Anambra, Imo, and Abia, has worsened alarmingly, leading to significant loss of lives and property. He cited specific incidents in June 2025 as evidence of the growing threat.
On June 1, terrorists, described as armed herdsmen, attacked communities in Agwa and nearby areas in Oguta Local Government Area of Imo State, killing multiple people, including a United States-based returnee, and kidnapping his wife in Umuguma, Owerri West.
In Enugu State, he said, the Mgbuji community in Eha-Amufu was attacked on June 9, leaving several residents dead.
Just three days later, on June 12, eight passengers and a driver were kidnapped along the Umuahia-Akara Road in Abia State.
Livingstone condemned the fact that the perpetrators continue to strike and escape unchallenged, accusing Southeastern political leaders of indifference and silence.
He traced the worsening insecurity to the extraordinary rendition of IPOB leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, from Kenya in June 2021. Since then, he said, Igboland has become a soft target for violent groups, with little state protection.
According to him, elected leaders in the Southeast have done little or nothing to reverse the trend.
“Many only pay lip service or keep silent out of fear of political consequences,” he said.
He warned that the Southeast is facing a deliberate campaign of destabilisation, and called on Igbo youth to rise and organize to protect their communities through hunter associations and other defensive measures.
“We must use all available means to defend Alaigbo,” he said, adding that relying on failed state structures would lead to further loss of lives.
Livingstone insisted that only organized, grassroots defence efforts can restore peace and security to Igboland.
