The Ogun State Police Command has launched a full-scale investigation into the murder of a suspected cult member in Atan-Ota, a town in Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State.

Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathered that the victim, 44-year-old Bashiru Saidu, was reportedly shot dead by members of a rival cult group on Sunday night, July 13, 2025.

The attackers, numbering four, arrived on two motorcycles and carried out the hit in what appears to be a coordinated cult-related assassination.

Police spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, confirmed the incident in a statement released on Monday.

According to her, the Atan-Ota Divisional Police Headquarters received a distress call at about 10:00 p.m. from residents who reported gunshots in the area.

“Four armed men riding on two motorcycles attacked and fatally shot one Bashiru Saidu along Bankole Onibukun Street, Atan-Ota,” Odutola said.

“The assailants immediately fled the scene after executing the attack.”

Upon arriving at the scene, police operatives found the victim with a severe gunshot wound to the head.

Saidu’s corpse was later deposited at the State Hospital Mortuary in Ilaro for further examination and autopsy.

Following the attack, the Commissioner of Police in Ogun State, Lanre Ogunlowo, ordered the immediate deployment of the Anti-Cultism Unit to the area.

The unit has been tasked with carrying out a thorough investigation with the aim of identifying and arresting those responsible.

Odutola emphasized that the Ogun State Command strongly condemns cult-related violence and is determined to rid the state of such criminal networks.

She called on residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to law enforcement agencies promptly.

The police also appealed to community leaders and parents to help dissuade youths from joining cult groups, which have continued to pose a major threat to public peace and safety.

As of the time of this report, no arrests have been made, but the investigation remains ongoing.
