Former United States President Donald Trump has declared Lionel Messi as the biggest football star in the world today.

Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathered that Trump made the remark while speaking to DAZN after watching Chelsea’s dominant 3–0 victory over Paris Saint-Germain in the FIFA Club World Cup final on Sunday night.

Although Trump acknowledged legendary Brazilian footballer Pelé as the greatest of all time, he heaped praise on Messi, referring to the Argentine icon as the most prominent football figure currently active in the sport.

Speaking to reporters, Trump said, “Messi, yes, he’s a great star, probably the biggest soccer star on this planet. Our country is lucky to have him playing here every week.”

Messi, who currently plays for Inter Miami in Major League Soccer (MLS), has significantly raised the profile of football in the United States since joining the league after leaving Paris Saint-Germain in 2023.

Despite Inter Miami’s early exit in the round of sixteen of the ongoing FIFA Club World Cup, Messi’s global influence remains unmatched, attracting new audiences and energizing American football fans.

The match Trump attended saw Chelsea dominate their French rivals, Paris Saint-Germain, with Cole Palmer scoring two identical goals and assisting João Pedro to seal a commanding three-goal lead in the first half.

Football fans worldwide continue to debate the GOAT (Greatest of All Time) conversation, with names like Messi, Pelé, Diego Maradona, and Cristiano Ronaldo frequently in the mix.

However, Trump’s endorsement adds a political dimension to Messi’s ever-expanding global brand, especially in a country still nurturing its footballing culture.

Trump’s comments also reflect a growing appreciation for soccer in the U.S., where Major League Soccer has steadily gained prominence through high-profile international signings and increased global exposure.

As Messi continues his journey in MLS, his presence may yet transform the league and inspire a new generation of American footballers.
