VISA: US Issues Final Warning to Nigerians

The US Embassy has issued a strict warning on US visa overstay for Nigerians, saying violators may face deportation and a permanent ban from re-entering the United States.

The warning, released via the embassy’s official X (formerly Twitter) account, on Monday July 13, targets travelers who remain in the U.S. beyond their authorized stay.

It urged Nigerians to strictly follow the conditions of their visas.

“If you remain in the United States beyond your authorized period of stay,” the embassy wrote, “you could be deported and could face a permanent ban on traveling to the United States in the future.”

This announcement is part of the embassy’s #VisaWiseTravelSmart campaign. The campaign aims to educate travelers about US visa rules and penalties.

According to the US Department of Homeland Security, visa overstays are a major immigration violation. Many foreigners remain in the US long after their visas expire.

As a result, US immigration authorities are tightening enforcement and increasing penalties.

Under current US immigration laws, overstaying for more than 180 days can trigger serious consequences. Offenders may receive a three-year or ten-year ban. In severe cases, they may never be allowed to return.

The embassy reminded Nigerians that following visa rules is not optional. Violations can affect future travel, work, and education plans.

This warning comes at a time when global immigration rules are becoming stricter.

In June, for example, Canada increased its proof of funds requirement to ₦17 million for new immigrants. Similar changes are happening in the UK and Australia.

Nigerians hoping to “japa” must now be more cautious than ever. Breaking the rules can ruin future chances.

The US Embassy advised travelers to leave the country before their visa expires. It also urged them to monitor deadlines and renew documents on time.

Staying in the US beyond your visa period can seem harmless. But it can destroy your immigration record permanently.
