FG disagrees with Nnamdi Kanu’s lawyer as Tinubu visits Kano
DDM News

Fresh legal tension surfaced in Abuja on Friday, July 18, 2025, as the Federal Government challenged a no-case submission filed by Nnamdi Kanu’s legal team in his ongoing terrorism trial.
Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathered that the prosecution team, led by Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Adegboyega Awomolo, urged Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court to compel the IPOB leader to open his defence.
The Federal Government alleges that Kanu’s activities, especially his broadcast messages, encouraged violence, destruction, and the deaths of over 170 security personnel across Nigeria.
Awomolo argued that the government had presented substantial evidence, including video and audio recordings, to prove its charges.
He maintained that the testimony of five prosecution witnesses and multiple exhibits were enough grounds for the court to dismiss the no-case argument raised by Kanu’s lead counsel, Kanu Agabi (SAN).
The defence had claimed the government failed to link the IPOB leader to terrorism, insisting the evidence presented was circumstantial and lacked legal weight.
Awomolo refuted that claim, stating that the prosecution’s reply brief thoroughly addressed every argument the defence raised.
He insisted the case had reached a point where the accused must respond to the allegations against him.
Meanwhile, on a different note, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu arrived in Kano State on Friday to pay a condolence visit to the family of late elder statesman and billionaire philanthropist, Alhaji Aminu Dantata.
The visit was confirmed by the state government through a statement issued by Sunusi Tofa, spokesperson to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.
The president’s visit was described as a show of unity and a mark of deep respect for Dantata’s legacy in commerce and public service.
Governor Yusuf, in the statement, called on Kano residents to give the President a warm and orderly reception in line with the state’s culture of hospitality.
The governor praised Dantata’s impact on Nigeria’s economy and urged citizens to reflect on his values of service and generosity.
In another development, a non-governmental organization, Restorative Justice for Africa (REJA), launched a transitional facility for ex-inmates in Nasarawa State.
The new centre, named Restored Voices Shelter, was commissioned on July 3, 2025, in Ado, Karu LGA.
Executive Director Osariemen Omoruyi-Shobanke said the project aims to help formerly incarcerated persons reintegrate into society with dignity, especially those unjustly detained or without families.
Elsewhere, in Ebonyi politics, former state PDP Chairman, Silas Onu, officially defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Meanwhile, Prof. Abubakar Sulaiman, Director General of the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS), has denied rumours linking him with a planned defection to ADC, calling the reports “baseless and mischievous.”
