Prince Al Waleed bin Khaled bin Talal, famously known as Saudi Arabia’s “Sleeping Prince,” has died after spending 20 years in a coma following a car accident in 2005.
His death was announced in a post on X (formerly Twitter) by his family, who described their “profound sadness and sorrow” and thanked the public for their prayers and emotional support over the years.
The family also expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the young royal who had become a symbol of endurance and faith across the Arab world.
Prince Al Waleed, a member of the influential House of Saud, was the son of Prince Khaled bin Talal and nephew of billionaire investor Prince Alwaleed bin Talal.
In 2005, the young prince sustained a severe head injury in a car crash while studying at a military college. The incident left him in a persistent coma at the age of 18.
For two decades, the prince remained on life support in a hospital room, with his family refusing to give up hope.
His father, Prince Khaled, famously declared that “life is in God’s hands” and insisted that the family would not turn off his son’s machines, believing in the possibility of divine healing.
Over the years, the prince’s condition attracted widespread attention.
Videos and photos of him in bed, often draped in a Saudi Arabian flag, were shared on social media by family members.
One notable video from 2019 showed the prince seemingly responding to a stimulus by slightly moving his fingers.
The moment sparked renewed hope among millions who had followed his story.
Despite his unchanging condition, the prince’s family continued to provide round-the-clock medical care, with visits from relatives and well-wishers regularly posted online.
He came to symbolize resilience, religious faith, and the depth of familial devotion in Saudi culture.
The funeral is scheduled to take place on Sunday in Riyadh.
Prince Al Waleed bin Khaled bin Talal’s passing marks the end of a deeply emotional chapter for the Saudi royal family and the millions across the Arab world who had come to know him as the “Sleeping Prince.”
His legacy continues to highlight the intersection of faith, family, and hope in the face of unimaginable tragedy.
