Senate to Hold Special Session for Buhari

The Nigerian Senate has announced a special session set for Wednesday, July 24, 2025, in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari. The tribute will focus on Buhari’s legacy and national contributions following his recent death.
Late president Buhari died in London on July 13 after battling a long and undisclosed illness.
He was buried in Daura, Katsina State, last week. The ceremony drew dignitaries from Nigeria and beyond.
President Bola Tinubu had earlier led a special session of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) in Buhari’s honour.
During the tribute, Tinubu praised Buhari for leading with dignity and bearing leadership burdens without complaint.
Buhari served Nigeria as a democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023. He also held power as a military head of state between 1983 and 1985. He remains the second-longest-serving leader in the country’s history.
The Senate’s upcoming tribute session will reflect on the former president’s leadership style and impact on national development. It mirrors the FEC’s previous honour, reinforcing Buhari’s place in Nigerian history.
Meanwhile, Senate President Godswill Akpabio has debunked viral claims about the creation of new Nigerian states.
He urged citizens to disregard unverified social media posts suggesting that the Constitution Review Committee had approved state creation.
Speaking during plenary, Akpabio said over 42 state creation proposals had been received.
However, none have completed the rigorous constitutional process required for approval.
He noted that some communities have started meeting to discuss development plans for their “new states,” but those efforts are premature and unofficial.
“There is no recommendation yet from the Senate. None of those proposals has gone through full deliberation,” Akpabio clarified.
Senator Abdul Ningi raised the issue of widespread misinformation, prompting the Senate to issue a formal response.
Akpabio reminded the public to wait for official communication on constitutional changes from the National Assembly.
The Senate also emphasized the need for responsible public engagement and urged the media to verify facts before sharing sensitive national matters.
