(DDM) – A prominent socio-political advocacy group, the Igbo Public Affairs Foundation (IPAF), has called on the Governor of Edo State to issue a public apology to former Anambra State Governor, Mr. Peter Obi, and the Nigerian people over a recent controversial statement allegedly made by the governor.

Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathered that the demand was made through an open letter widely circulated on social media, signed by Hon. Uzoh George-Tiga (mnim), the Convener of IPAF.

The group expressed deep disappointment and concern over what it described as a “threat” by the Edo State Governor, suggesting that Mr. Obi’s security could not be guaranteed during his visit to the state.

In the open letter addressed directly to the Governor at Government House, Benin City, IPAF described the remark as “divisive and inflammatory,” asserting that it falls short of the standards expected of a public official.

The statement reads in part:

“Your actions and words have been perceived as ethnic grandstanding, targeting Mr. Obi because of his Igbo heritage.

This is unacceptable in a nation that prides itself on unity and diversity.”

IPAF further accused the Governor of fanning ethnic tensions and enabling sentiments that could undermine national unity.

It stated that instead of promoting peace and inclusion, the Governor appeared to be acting out of political loyalty and expediency.

The group warned that such utterances could set dangerous precedents and embolden others with ethnic biases to act against national interest.

Calling for immediate redress, the Foundation demanded a public apology not only to Mr. Obi but to all Nigerians. According to the group, such an apology would reflect a commitment to responsible leadership and a willingness to heal ethnic divisions that continue to strain Nigeria’s fragile unity.

“This apology would be a step towards healing and rebuilding trust,” the letter emphasized.

“It would demonstrate your commitment to leadership that serves the interests of all, regardless of ethnicity or political affiliation.”

As of the time of this report, the Edo State Government has not officially responded to the open letter or addressed the backlash triggered by the governor’s controversial comment.

The situation continues to stir public reactions online, with many Nigerians urging political leaders to avoid language that could endanger peaceful coexistence across the country.

Peter Obi, a former vice-presidential candidate and the presidential flagbearer of the Labour Party in the 2023 general election, enjoys widespread support across Nigeria, particularly among youths and the Igbo community.

His political influence remains significant, and any perceived threat to his movement or personal safety often draws strong reactions from civil societyand advocacy groups.
