Europe Burning: Greece’s Kryoneri and France’s Aude Ravaged by Firestorms

A fierce wildfire swept through Kryoneri, a northern suburb of Athens, Greece, on Saturday, prompting emergency evacuations as fire crews battled to contain the rapidly spreading blaze.

The country’s fire service reported that the inferno, fueled by extreme heat and strong winds, led authorities to issue three urgent evacuation alerts via SMS to residents in the affected area.

It is reportedly located approximately 20 kilometers (12.5 miles) northeast of the capital.

Speaking to the media, fire service spokesperson Vassilis Vathrakoyannis confirmed the evacuations.

He also acknowledged reports of property damage, although the full extent of the destruction remains unclear.

“We will assess the situation once the fire is under control,” he stated, underscoring the severity of the incident.

Greek television networks broadcast images of homes engulfed in flames, painting a grim picture of the disaster’s reach.

Vathrakoyannis warned that the most challenging phase could still lie ahead.

In response to the escalating emergency, Greece has requested six additional firefighting aircraft through the European Union’s civil protection mechanism.

On the ground, firefighting efforts were intense, with 145 personnel, 44 fire engines, 10 aircraft, and seven helicopters deployed in an attempt to subdue the blaze.

The fire’s origin remains undetermined.

As temperatures soared to 38°C (100°F) and beyond, the combination of heat, drought conditions, and powerful winds created a perfect storm for fire expansion.

Vathrakoyannis emphasized the volatility of the current weather, stating, “Under these conditions, wildfires can spread with alarming speed and pose serious danger.

Unfortunately, we expect these conditions to persist in the coming days.”

Meanwhile, the Greek fire service was also engaged with three other significant fires across the country’s largest islands.

Fires raged on Crete in the south, Evia to the north of Athens, and Kythera northwest of Crete.

Across these regions, at least 335 firefighters and a fleet of 19 aircraft and 13 helicopters were actively fighting the blazes, though their operations are restricted to daylight hours.

Over the past 24 hours alone, Greece experienced a total of 52 wildfire outbreaks, reflecting an alarming trend of increasing fire incidents.

Greece has faced a growing number of wildfires in recent years, many of which have caused considerable damage.

Several fires have erupted across the country in the past month, raising serious concerns about climate resilience and emergency preparedness.

The wildfire crisis was not limited to Greece.

On the same day, a large fire broke out in southern France, impacting the Aude region along the Mediterranean coast near the Spanish border.

The fire began in the afternoon and quickly consumed 600 hectares (1,500 acres) of land, driven by fierce winds.

Local authorities ordered the evacuation of two campgrounds and several nearby homes.

Rémi Recio, the deputy prefect of Aude, reported that around 630 firefighters, supported by roughly a dozen aircraft, were mobilized to fight the fire.

Two homes were destroyed in the flames, and a local gymnasium was converted into a temporary shelter for evacuees.

Though residents from approximately ten homes were initially displaced, most were allowed to return after conditions improved.

Three firefighters were treated for smoke inhalation.

This blaze follows another devastating wildfire that hit the same region less than a month earlier.

That fire scorched over 2,100 hectares (5,200 acres) near Narbonne and required a response from 1,000 firefighters, highlighting the increasing frequency and scale of such disasters across southern Europe.

Both Greece and France are facing a harsh wildfire season, exacerbated by prolonged heatwaves and arid landscapes.

The repeated outbreaks across the Mediterranean underscore the urgent need for coordinated fire management strategies.

It also calls for climate adaptation policies to protect vulnerable communities from the growing threat of wildfires.
