2027: ADC jettison s zoning, chooses merit, national interest

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has decided to prioritize merit and national interest over zoning in its selection process for the 2027 presidential candidate.

This decision comes as the party prepares to field a strong candidate to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the next general election .

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has emerged as a strong contender for the ADC presidential ticket.

Veteran journalist Dele Momodu has endorsed Atiku, citing his political strength, business acumen, and broad support base in northern Nigeria.

Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi is also vying for the ADC ticket.

Despite retaining his Labour Party membership, the ADC has confirmed that Obi is eligible to contest for the presidential ticket.

LP’s Vice Presidential candidate, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, has thrown his weight behind Obi, stating that he has earned the right to lead the ticket.

Former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi has also expressed interest in the ADC presidential ticket.

He has pledged to serve only one term if elected, citing the need to adhere to Nigeria’s unwritten power rotation agreement between the North and South.

According to Paul Ibe, spokesperson for Atiku Abubakar, the ADC presidential candidate will be determined by party delegates.

Ibe emphasized that ADC leaders have reached an understanding to make sacrifices and allow delegates to decide who will fly the party’s banner in 2027.

The ADC has stated that it does not have a preferred presidential candidate, emphasizing its focus on building a credible and strong political platform capable of delivering on its mission .

The ADC’s decision to prioritize merit and national interest over zoning reflects its commitment to selecting a candidate who can effectively lead the country, rather than one chosen based on regional or sectional considerations.

With multiple strong contenders vying for the ticket, the ADC’s selection process is expected to be highly competitive, potentially leading to a more robust and effective campaign in 2027.

According to the party, zoning has contributed to the current political challenges in the country, and there is a need to shift attention to leadership built on merit, ideas, and national interest.
