NIDCOM Slams Anti-Nigerian Protest in Ghana, Calls for Calm

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) has formally addressed the circulation of a viral video showing a group of Ghanaians protesting and demanding the deportation of Nigerians from Ghana.
The video, which has stirred significant concern across social media platforms, depicts protestors alleging that some Nigerians are involved in criminal activities.
They also claimed that their conduct conflicts with Ghanaian cultural and societal norms.
In response, NIDCOM’s Chairman and CEO, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, issued a strong statement on Tuesday denouncing the generalisation of Nigerians as criminals.
She described such sweeping accusations as both unjust and potentially inflammatory, especially within the long-standing cordial relations between Ghana and Nigeria.
“It is absolutely unfair to label an entire nationality based on the actions of a few,” Dabiri-Erewa stated.
“Nigerians are not criminals.
The vast majority are law-abiding, hardworking individuals who contribute positively to the communities in which they live, including in Ghana.”
The NIDCOM boss emphasized the deep historical, economic, and socio-political ties between Nigeria and Ghana, likening the two West African nations to “Siamese twins” with a shared destiny in the sub-region.
She reiterated the importance of peace and cooperation under the framework of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
Her statement stressed that such regional ties must not be threatened by misinformation or isolated incidents.
“The relationship between Ghana and Nigeria must be protected.
“We are brothers, and in the spirit of ECOWAS, we must continue to live peacefully as one community,” she said.
Dabiri-Erewa called for calm among Nigerians residing in Ghana, urging them not to be provoked or respond with violence.
She noted that the Nigerian government, through its diplomatic channels, is actively engaging with Ghanaian authorities.
This is to address the matter constructively and ensure that it does not escalate into a broader conflict.
“Let diplomacy take its course.
“I appeal to Nigerians in Ghana to remain calm and continue to be good ambassadors of our country,” she added.
The NIDCOM chief also cautioned against the spread of inciteful and inflammatory language from both Nigerian and Ghanaian citizens.
She warned that such rhetoric could worsen tensions and strain diplomatic relations.
She highlighted the need for responsible communication, especially on social media where unverified information spreads quickly.
Responding to viral claims that Nigerian-owned shops and properties are being attacked or destroyed in Ghana, Dabiri-Erewa urged Nigerians to ignore such reports unless verified by credible sources.
“There is no credible evidence that Nigerians’ businesses or properties are being targeted at this time.
“We must avoid panic and refrain from retaliation based on false or exaggerated claims.”
She commended the efforts of both the Nigerian and Ghanaian High Commissions for their swift intervention and coordination in managing the situation.
According to her, diplomatic engagements are ongoing.
The Nigerian Minister of State for Foreign Affairs is already in contact with relevant Ghanaian authorities to ensure a peaceful and balanced resolution.
The incident has drawn concern from civil society, especially considering the potential to undermine the decades-long bond between the two nations.
Nigeria and Ghana, two of ECOWAS’s most influential members, have a complex but generally cooperative history.
This history is marked by strong economic ties, cultural exchange, and mutual migration.
Citizens from both countries have lived and worked across borders for decades, contributing to local economies and fostering regional integration.
In concluding her statement, Dabiri-Erewa encouraged Ghanaians and Nigerians alike to rise above xenophobic tendencies.
She urged them to preserve the mutual respect and brotherhood that have defined their bilateral relations over the years.
“We must not allow the actions of a few individuals to divide us.
“Let us focus on strengthening our ties, promoting unity, and resolving differences through peaceful and diplomatic means,” she said.
As diplomatic efforts continue, stakeholders from both nations have urged the public to remain calm.
They are also urged to stay informed through official sources, and work together to maintain peace and mutual respect in the West African sub-region.
