The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has issued a strong warning to Nigerian travellers heading to the United States.
They urged them to strictly follow their visa conditions and comply with U.S. immigration protocols.
This advisory came after the U.S. government raised concerns over increasing cases of visa misuse by Nigerian nationals.
According to U.S. authorities, several travellers violated visa terms by engaging in activities not stated in their application, including illegal trade or overstaying.
In a statement signed by the Assistant Comptroller and National Public Relations Officer, Dr. Abdullahi Maiwada, the NCS said visa holders must understand the risks of violating immigration laws.
He emphasized that U.S. immigration monitors visitor behaviour continuously.
Any breach of travel terms can lead to visa cancellation, deportation, or even permanent travel bans.
Additionally, the Customs Service reminded travellers to declare any cash exceeding $10,000 or its equivalent during entry or exit.
It warned that failure to declare such funds may result in seizure, prosecution, or denial of entry.
Furthermore, the NCS warned against carrying prohibited items, stressing that ignorance will not excuse offenders.
Travellers were also cautioned to stay away from fraudulent practices, whether in Nigeria or abroad.
“Those who commit fraud in any jurisdiction will face legal consequences under both U.S. and Nigerian laws,” the agency stated.
To avoid broader diplomatic fallout, the NCS revealed that it is working closely with the U.S. Mission in Abuja. The aim is to ensure Nigeria does not face expanded visa restrictions, which could negatively affect innocent citizens with genuine travel needs.
The agency urged all prospective travellers to act responsibly, maintain proper conduct, and avoid putting Nigeria’s reputation at risk.
Meanwhile, the Customs Service continues to carry out public awareness campaigns to educate citizens on proper travel practices and border regulations.
