Nigerian Anglicans Reject Election of Lesbian Cleric as Archbishop

The Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) has issued a firm rejection of the election of Rt. Rev. Cherry Vann, an openly lesbian cleric, as the new Archbishop of Wales.

Rt. Rev. Cherry Vann.

Church leaders say the move marks a dangerous shift away from biblical truth and threatens the unity of the global Anglican family.

In a statement released by its Primate, The Most Rev’d Henry Ndukuba, the Church described Vann’s elevation as a “serious departure from biblical teaching.”

Ndukuba emphasized that the appointment reflects deep spiritual decay and signals a growing abandonment of the gospel.

He stressed that the leadership in Wales has ignored scripture and prioritized worldly ideology.

According to him, such choices only increase the risk of division within the Anglican Communion.

He argued that this trend will eventually weaken the Church’s credibility and damage its mission across the globe.

To further drive his point, Ndukuba compared the development to the controversial leadership of Most Rev. Katherine Jefferts Schori, the former Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church in the United States.

He recalled how her progressive teachings caused sharp divisions between liberal and conservative Anglicans between 2006 and 2015.

Moreover, Ndukuba warned that many leaders who claim to follow Christ now reject sound doctrine. He quoted 2 Timothy 4:3–4, saying, “They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.”

Beyond that, he noted that Wales, once a land of great revival, now faces the danger of spiritual irrelevance. He urged the Church in Wales to repent and return to biblical values before it loses its divine purpose.

In addition, the Church of Nigeria encouraged Anglicans worldwide to reject what it called apostasy. It called on faithful Christians to stand with conservative groups like the Global Anglican Future Conference (GAFCON), which remain committed to traditional biblical values.

Ndukuba made the Church’s position unmistakably clear.

He declared, “We completely reject and refuse to recognize the election of Cherry Vann as Archbishop of Wales.”

In conclusion, he warned that without repentance and godliness, the Church in Wales may lose its place in God’s divine plan.

He said that leaders who compromise the truth will not escape judgment.
