Nnamdi Kanu: British govt sends diplomat to monitor trial

Mr Osaro Odemwingie, a representative of the British High Commission, was in court to witness proceedings today, as the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu appeared at the the Federal High Court, Abuja.

Placard carrying IPOB members were outside the court complex singing and dancing.

This comes as a member of the House of Representatives, Nkem Uzoma-Abonta, condemns the Federal Government’s planned secret trail of the detained leader of IPOB.

The court thereafter fixed Feb. 10 to rule on whether or not it will dismiss the treason charges preferred against Kanu.

The court would also rule on whether or not to quash the charges preferred against three other defendants, Chidiebere Onwudiwe, Benjamin Madubugwu and David Nwawuisi, who were charged along with Kanu.

Similarly, the court would give a ruling on an application bordering on the competence of the charge against Kanu, the first defendant.

The four defendants are standing trial for alleged treasonable felony and terrorism.

Elombah.com had reported that Nnamdi Kanu, the director of Radio Biafra sent a letter to the British government to intervene in his case and push for his release.

The director of Radio Biafra was arrested in 2015 by security operatives over alleged solicitation of arms and has been charged with treason alongside Benjamin Madubugwu and David Nwawuisi who are both pro-Biafra agitators.

Kanu approached the British government through his lawyer, Mr. Ifeanyi Ejiofor.

He urged the foreign government to push President Muhammadu Buhari to release him. Kanu said his prolonged detention in prison was a clear violation of his fundamental right.
