Abejide vows to legally expel Obi, Atiku loyalists

A serving federal lawmaker, Leke Abejide, has issued a strong warning to supporters of opposition figures Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar, accusing them of trying to hijack the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathered that Abejide made the declaration during an ADC stakeholders’ meeting held on August 1, 2024, which was broadcast by Symfoni TV.

Abejide, who is the highest-ranking elected official within the ADC, alleged that elements loyal to the Labour Party and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had infiltrated the party with hidden agendas.

He described their involvement as an invasion aimed at destabilizing the ADC’s internal structure and redirecting its leadership ahead of the 2027 elections.

According to him, the infiltrators—many of whom were formerly affiliated with the PDP and Labour Party—were now attempting to assume control of the party’s direction without following legitimate processes.

“We will use every legal method available to drive them out of the ADC,” Abejide stated during the meeting.

He insisted that the political actors in question were trying to dismantle the ADC in order to realign it with emerging coalitions involving PDP and Labour Party loyalists.

The Kogi-born legislator argued that this political maneuver echoed past strategies that had brought down other parties in Nigeria’s democratic history.

“They destroyed their former parties and now want to repeat the same in ours,” he said, warning ADC members to remain vigilant.

He also questioned the legitimacy of the current ADC National Committee, claiming that proper internal electoral procedures were not followed in its constitution.

Abejide emphasized that the party’s authentic leadership remains unchanged and would be defended legally and constitutionally.

He said he was prepared to go to court if necessary, to ensure that the ADC does not fall into the hands of political opportunists.

The lawmaker dismissed the speculation of a political alliance involving the ADC and major opposition blocs as both unauthorized and self-serving.

He declared that the ADC was not a political commodity to be seized by external forces, but a platform for its true members.

Abejide’s comments have sparked sharp reactions across political circles, especially as Nigeria moves closer to the 2027 general elections.

Some political analysts see the move as part of a broader push to protect minor parties from being absorbed or dismantled by larger political machines.

Others suggest that the tensions reveal deeper fractures within the ADC itself, particularly regarding its future strategy and alliances.

The incident comes amid growing speculation about new realignments in Nigeria’s opposition camp following the outcomes of the 2023 elections.

Peter Obi of the Labour Party and Atiku Abubakar of the PDP have remained influential figures in opposition politics, despite failing to clinch the presidency.

The ADC, one of Nigeria’s lesser-known but historically significant parties, now finds itself in the middle of a power struggle that could determine its 2027 relevance.

Observers believe that Abejide’s firm stand may signal the beginning of internal legal battles and further political showdowns in the months ahead.
