Abia: Gunmen kill 2 police officers extorting money from motorists in Ohafia

Two police officers killed by gunmen

Gunmen suspected to be members of Biafra Liberation Army, on Wednesday, launched vicious attack on police operatives harassing and extorting money from motorists in Asaga and Ebem communities, in Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State.

The attack which occurred around 7:30am, NewsBand reliably gathered, resulted in the deaths of two police officers.

A source in one of the neighboring community told NewsBand that the officers were caught off guard while extorting money from commuters.

“The officers were extorting money from commuters when the gunmen in a commando style attacked and killed two of them.

“These officers every market day will block Ugwu-aba road, harassing and extorting N500 from every motorists that stops in their illegal checkpoint”, the source said.

Meanwhile, this latest violence comes just two days after another attack on police officers in the state.

On Sunday, gunmen ambushed a convoy in Umuahia, targeting officers assigned to Hon. Ginger Onwusibe, a member of the House of Representatives.

The ambush claimed the life of one officer, left another injured, and saw the driver narrowly escape.

Police authorities in Abia State are yet to issue a statement in respect to the development.
