Abia NUJ slams blackout on Umuahia North Council chairman

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Abia State Council, has declared an indefinite media blackout on the Chairman of Umuahia North Local Government Area, Mr. Smart Iheoma, as well as all official activities of the LGA.

Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathered that the decision followed allegations that Mr. Iheoma verbally assaulted and threatened journalists who were on duty during the May 2025 statewide environmental sanitation exercise.

According to reports, the council chairman was reportedly angered that he was not interviewed and responded by verbally abusing the journalists present.

The NUJ’s decision was made public through a ten-point communiqué issued at the end of its June 2025 monthly congress.

The resolution, signed by Abia NUJ Chairman, Chidi Asonye, and Secretary, Iyke Onuegbu, announced a total boycott of the chairman and any coverage related to Umuahia North Local Government in all conventional media platforms.

The union emphasized that its members would no longer report, broadcast, or publish any event or statement originating from Mr. Iheoma or the LGA under his leadership.

The communiqué described the chairman’s conduct as not only insulting but also threatening, noting that he allegedly referred to journalists as “imbeciles” and “criminals.”

He was also reported to have threatened to ban them from covering state events.

The union strongly condemned what it described as the unbecoming behavior of an elected public official.

It reminded political leaders of the crucial role of the press in a democratic society and emphasized that such abuse would not be tolerated.

The NUJ further warned that any registered member who defies this resolution, including any media outlet that covers or reports activities related to Mr. Iheoma or Umuahia North, will face disciplinary action.

While reaffirming its cordial relationship with the Abia State Government, the NUJ insisted it would not tolerate any action that disrespects or undermines the professional responsibility of journalists.

The union reiterated its commitment to upholding the dignity, freedom, and safety of media practitioners who are charged with the duty of informing, educating, and entertaining the public.

This development has triggered reactions across the state, with several media advocates urging public officeholders to engage the press with civility and mutual respect.

The NUJ’s decision is viewed as a bold stand in defense of press freedom amid rising concerns over media intimidation by government actors.
