The Abia State Environmental Protection Agency (ASEPA) has unveiled its plans to initiate recycling of waste products.
This initiative is part of a broader effort to modernize waste management practices across the state.
Ogbonnaya Okereke, the General Manager of ASEPA, shared this development during a press briefing on Monday.
The briefing followed the weekly executive meeting, showcasing the agency’s commitment to enhancing waste management.
Okereke underlined the agency’s shift from a linear economy to a circular economy in waste management.
He explained, “We are transitioning to a circular economy focused on modern collection, recycling, and repurposing.”
He highlighted the potential of recycling, stating that waste can be repurposed to serve useful purposes again.
“Instead of wasting waste, we can recycle it and make it valuable once more,” Okereke added.
Additionally, Okereke revealed that several organizations have shown interest in collaborating with the state government to support this innovative initiative.
By aligning with global sustainable waste practices, this strategy reduces pollution and converts waste into resources.
Simultaneously, Commissioner Prince Okey Kanu praised ASEPA during the briefing for significantly improving public space cleanliness statewide.
He highlighted modern waste collection methods, such as direct home and business pickups, ensuring efficient service delivery.
As part of the initiative, ASEPA plans to introduce a revised tariff system for waste disposal.
“The government will offer some assistance while citizens contribute through minimal charges,” Kanu explained.
This approach seeks to balance affordability for residents with the sustainability of the program.
