Absolve yourself from herdsmen carnage, Southwest leaders tell Buhari

Elites and leaders of the South West have asked President Mohammadu Buhari to absolve himself of herdsmen militia killings in their region.

The demand was made at a meeting of Southwest security stakeholders initiated and chaired by Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yoruba Land, Iba Gani Adams, which took place Friday.

Adams at the meeting attended by Mr. Yinka Odumakin, Gbonka Gboyega Adejumo, Bashorun Akin Osuntokun Ogbeni Sola Lawal , Chief Olumuyiwa Okunowo and other leaders alleged exasperation inherent in the statement of Chief of Defence Staff who called on Nigerians to defend themselves, viewing it as “clear official endorsement of self defense.”

The Yoruba leader who bemoaned the utter disregard for human lives, expressed fear that the situation if not addressed signals a grievous national crisis. He therefore called on government to quickly arrest the apparent descent into anarchy.

He noted also, “The meeting aligned with the call of the governors of South West that President Muhammadu Buhari to prove his innocence in the carnage being perpetrated by herders by not only unambiguously condemning the nefarious acts but also take clear steps to exterminate it.

“Multinational states such as Nigeria must be built on respect for different human components making up the sovereign nation. There is need for Nigeria to return to pure federalism which was the political arrangement leaders of the nation endorsed at independence. This will allow various nations in the country to take proper control of their affairs including security.”

However, Adams and other stakeholders at the meeting also backed continuity of Operation Amotekun, the southwest Security Network.
