(DDM) – Fear has gripped residents of Mabushi District in Abuja after part of a five-storey building suddenly collapsed.
Instead of demolishing the compromised structure, authorities are allegedly attempting to patch the damaged section.
Residents described the move as “dangerous engineering gymnastics” and warned it could trigger a bigger disaster if ignored.
Some neighbors insist their repeated complaints to regulators have been brushed aside because a powerful individual is connected to the property.
One resident told DDM that speaking out publicly may be the only way to prevent unnecessary loss of lives.
The resident stressed that safety should take priority, questioning why anyone would attempt to repair a collapsing building.
The building is located behind RCCG Grace City, directly opposite the ANAN Secretariat, off Ahmadu Bello Way.
Officials from the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) sealed the property on July 24, 2025.
Despite this, reports indicate that makeshift repairs have continued, raising fresh fears of compromise within regulatory bodies.
Residents accuse some officials of placing political connections above human safety in their handling of the crisis.
Eyewitnesses told DDM that engineers were seen trying to reinforce the damaged structure rather than pulling it down.
Experts warn that when a multi-storey building begins to fail, patching is never a safe or sustainable solution.
Nigeria has a tragic history of collapsed buildings, particularly in Lagos and Abuja, leaving scores dead in recent years.
In 2021, a 21-storey luxury tower collapsed in Ikoyi, Lagos, killing at least 45 people and sparking outrage nationwide.
Analysts say the Mabushi incident could become another catastrophic example if urgent demolition is not enforced.
Many residents around the area now live in fear, uncertain of when the weakened structure might give way completely.
Questions are also being asked about how such a building was allowed to remain standing despite an official seal order.
Some residents suspect corruption within FCDA, alleging that enforcement officers are under pressure from well-connected figures.
The controversy has intensified as social media users share videos of the patched sections, urging immediate intervention.
Calls are mounting for the Federal Government to step in and order the full demolition of the compromised structure.
Activists insist that Abuja cannot afford another building collapse scandal tied to negligence and political interference.
For now, residents are demanding transparency, accountability, and urgent demolition to avoid a preventable tragedy.
