The Academic and non-academic staff of Lagos State University (LASU) have begun an indefinite strike over welfare-related issues.
The strike began on Thursday, July 31, 2025, following an unresolved disputes between the university workers and the school management.
The four staff unions ASUU, SSANU, NASU, and NAAT took the decision during an emergency congress.
Operating under the Joint Action Committee, the unions resolved to begin the industrial action immediately.
In a letter dated July 31 and addressed to the Vice Chancellor, Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, the unions confirmed the start of the strike.
The letter was signed by key officials of the unions:
Prof. Ibrahim Bakare (ASUU Chairman)
Sylvester Idowu (ASUU Secretary)
Oluwaseyi Lawal (SSANU Chairman)
Waheed Majekodunmi (SSANU Secretary)
They stated that the strike would continue until all demands are fully met by the authorities.
According to the notice titled “Notice of Indefinite Strike Action,” all staff across LASU’s campuses, including LASUCOM and LASU Epe, have been directed to stop work.
“All members of staff of the University and its affiliate Campuses are hereby directed to withdraw their services and vacate their duty post,” the statement read.
While the unions appreciated the vice chancellor’s support in previous matters, they insisted that this strike would not end until their conditions are satisfied.
The exact list of the workers’ demands was not available at the time of reporting. However, sources suggest they relate to welfare, promotion arrears, and working conditions.
The strike is expected to disrupt academic and administrative activities across LASU’s multiple campuses.
This action adds to the growing unrest in Nigeria’s education sector, where staff often strike over unmet agreements.
