The Osun State Police Command has begun an investigation into the shooting of the Accord Party chairman in Osogbo Local Government Area, Asimiyu Ajibola.

Ajibola was attacked by suspected gunmen on Wednesday night in the MDS area of Osogbo and is currently receiving treatment at the Osun State University Teaching Hospital.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the Police Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Ojelabi, said the incident happened around 9:50 p.m. when two armed men riding a motorcycle allegedly opened fire on the politician in what authorities described as an attempted assassination.

According to the police, officers quickly responded to a distress call, evacuated the victim to a hospital and immediately launched a manhunt for the attackers.

“A team of police officers swiftly moved the victim to a medical facility, where he is currently receiving treatment. Doctors have confirmed that Hon. Ajibola is stable and responding well to treatment,” the statement said.

The police added that operational teams were deployed to track down the suspects, who fled the scene after the attack.

Investigators also recovered items believed to be linked to the incident, which are now undergoing forensic examination.

Osun State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan, has ordered a full-scale investigation and directed all relevant units to deploy every available resource to identify, arrest and prosecute those responsible.

“The Command wishes to assure the public that no effort will be spared in uncovering the circumstances surrounding this attack and bringing the perpetrators to justice,” the statement added.

Residents were also urged to remain calm and provide any useful information that could aid the investigation.

Meanwhile, the Osun State Government has condemned the attack and called for a thorough and professional investigation.

In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, the government confirmed that Ajibola is receiving treatment at the UNIOSUN Teaching Hospital.

Alimi said one of the occupants of the vehicle carrying the Accord Party chairman alleged that gunmen suddenly opened fire on them while they were returning from the MDS area around 9:50 p.m.

According to him, the occupants managed to escape and sought refuge at the Dugbe Divisional Police Headquarters before the attackers fled.

Describing the incident as disturbing, the commissioner urged security agencies to ensure that everyone involved is identified and prosecuted.

“It is an unfortunate incident that must not be swept aside. Those behind it must be brought to justice,” Alimi said.

He further urged investigators to carry out their work without fear or favour, noting that early indications suggest the attack may have political undertones.
