The chairman of Accord Party in Osun state, Asimiyu Ajibola, has been hospitalised at the University of Osun Teaching Hospital following an attack by gunmen in Osogbo on Wednesday.
The attack occurred around 9:50pm near the MDS area of the state capital, causing panic among residents as gunshots rang out across the neighbourhood.
The assailants, Diaspora Digital Media understand, trailed a blue Toyota Corolla carrying Ajibola and other occupants before opening fire on the vehicle in what appeared to be a targeted attack.
The occupants reportedly escaped and sought refuge at the Dugbe Divisional Police Headquarters before the attackers fled the scene
The Osun State Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, condemned the attack and called for a thorough investigation to ensure those responsible are brought to justice.
The Command confirmed on Thursday that it had commenced an investigation into the shooting.
Police spokesperson, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, said officers responded promptly to a distress call, evacuated the victim for medical treatment, and deployed tactical teams to track down the suspects.
According to the police, Ajibola is in stable condition and responding positively to treatment, while evidence recovered from the scene is undergoing forensic analysis.
The Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan, has ordered a full-scale investigation and directed officers to identify, arrest, and prosecute those responsible for the attack.
