New details have surfaced in the case surrounding the death of veteran actor James Handy, as a family member of the accused has spoken out about his mental health history.
Wendy Gledhill, the mother of 44-year-old Michael Gledhill, revealed that her son had been battling serious mental health challenges prior to the incident. According to her, he was diagnosed with schizophrenia in July 2025 but later stopped taking his prescribed medication.
She explained that following his diagnosis, Michael became increasingly paranoid, and his condition appeared to worsen in the days leading up to the tragedy. Wendy alleged that he had stopped taking his medication about a week before James Handy was found fatally stabbed outside her home.
Despite the incident, she described the relationship between her son and the late actor as generally cordial. While they had occasional disagreements, she said they maintained a respectful connection.
In an emotional message addressed to the actor’s family, Wendy expressed deep remorse, saying:
“Fighting back tears, they know I loved him so much. I’m so sorry. I’m so sorry this happened. I’m still in shock. I still can’t comprehend it.”
According to police reports, a 911 caller made a disturbing statement claiming responsibility for the act. When officers arrived at the scene, Michael reportedly approached them and identified himself as the suspect.
He was subsequently arrested and charged with one count of murder. Authorities say video footage shows him walking around the neighbourhood before police arrived, after which he was taken into custody.
When asked whether her son should spend the rest of his life in prison, Wendy stated that he should not be in a position where he can harm anyone again.
Michael Gledhill is currently being held on $2 million bail. Law enforcement officials have not yet disclosed a motive for the killing, and they have also not confirmed the claims regarding his alleged schizophrenia or any other mental health condition.
Investigations into the case remain ongoing.
