(DDM) – Professor Jideofor Adibe, a respected political scientist at Nasarawa State University, has advised Peter Obi to reject overtures from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), warning that the offer of a presidential ticket may be a calculated political trap.
Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathered that Adibe made this statement during an interview with Channels Television, where he analyzed the PDP’s zoning debate and its possible implications for Nigeria’s 2027 presidential race.
According to him, the sudden narrative of offering Obi the party’s presidential ticket is not necessarily a genuine invitation but a ploy to neutralize his growing political influence.
“If I were Obi, I would not take that bait. The aim is to deny him a platform to run,” Adibe warned.
He further stated that Obi, who emerged as one of Nigeria’s most formidable political figures after his 2023 Labour Party presidential bid, is fully aware of the complex political calculations unfolding behind the scenes.
“He is no fool. In politics, nobody shows their hand fully,” Adibe noted, stressing that Obi is likely to keep his strategies close to his chest until the right time.
The professor explained that Nigeria’s political environment is rife with staged conflicts and hidden alliances, making it difficult to predict future outcomes with certainty.
“Sometimes animosities are contrived publicly as part of political chess moves. So we are just observing,” he said, adding that he remains unexcited about the zoning debate, which he believes can be manipulated for political advantage.
Political analysts view Adibe’s remarks as an important caution, particularly given Nigeria’s history of political maneuvering, where powerful figures often switch parties or enter temporary alliances to gain strategic leverage.
Peter Obi, who served as Governor of Anambra State under the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) before joining the PDP in 2014 and later moving to the Labour Party in 2022, has become a symbol of alternative leadership for millions of Nigerians, especially the youth.
His 2023 campaign, which focused on accountability, transparency, and human capital development, reshaped Nigeria’s political conversation and positioned him as a frontrunner for the 2027 election.
Observers believe that returning to the PDP could dilute Obi’s brand as a reformist and weaken his credibility as a leader who champions a new political order.
