Nigeria’s Falconets have rediscovered their confidence at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, but head coach Moses Aduku knows their biggest challenge so far is waiting just around the corner.
After struggling to find the back of the net in their opening two matches, Nigeria produced a spectacular response by demolishing New Caledonia 10-1 on Sunday to secure their place in the Round of 16.
The emphatic victory completely changed the mood around the Falconets. What had looked like a difficult campaign after a 2-0 defeat to Spain and a goalless draw against China suddenly became a knockout-stage adventure.
But Aduku is not allowing the huge scoreline to create unnecessary confidence ahead of Thursday’s meeting with England.
The Nigerian coach has warned his players that they will face a much tougher examination when they take on the European side at Stadion Miejski Bielsko-Biała in Poland.
“It’s going to be a tough test,” Aduku said, making it clear that the Falconets must produce another disciplined performance if they are to keep their hopes of winning the tournament alive.
Nigeria had entered their final Group F match under serious pressure. With only one point from their opening two games, the Falconets needed a convincing victory against New Caledonia to give themselves a realistic chance of advancing.
They responded in spectacular fashion.
Ramotalahi Kareem opened the scoring from the penalty spot before continuing her outstanding afternoon with two more goals to complete a hat-trick. Her contribution gave Nigeria the attacking spark they had been missing earlier in the tournament.
Substitute Winner Onajite David also made a huge impact after coming off the bench, scoring three times as Nigeria turned the match into a one-sided contest.
The goals kept coming as the Falconets dismantled their opponents and eventually recorded their biggest win of the tournament.
New Caledonia did manage to find a consolation goal through Joceline Kourevi, who made history by scoring her country’s first goal at the competition. However, the moment offered little relief as Nigeria continued to dominate and eventually finished with 10 goals.
For Aduku, the result was exactly what Nigeria needed after two frustrating matches.
The coach had previously called on his players to improve their finishing after failing to score against both Spain and China. Against New Caledonia, the response was emphatic.
However, the manager knows that England will not offer the same opportunities.
While Nigeria were delighted with their attacking display, Aduku also admitted that his team must improve defensively. The Falconets have conceded goals during the tournament and cannot afford to give England similar openings in a knockout match.
“We’ve shipped a few too many goals in this tournament so far, so we’ll be looking to shore things up at the back,” the coach said.
That warning could prove crucial.
The Round of 16 is completely different from the group stage. There is no room for Nigeria to recover from a poor performance because defeat will immediately bring their World Cup campaign to an end.
England therefore represent a major test of whether the 10-1 victory was simply a response to a weaker opponent or a genuine sign that the Falconets have found their rhythm.
Aduku, however, appears confident in his players.
The coach knows what is at stake and has challenged his squad to embrace the pressure rather than fear it.
“If you want to be crowned champions, you’ve got to win every game. We’re ready for the challenge,” he said.
That mentality is particularly important for a Nigerian side with a strong history at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.
The Falconets have appeared at every edition of the tournament since it began in 2002, making Nigeria one of the competition’s most consistent teams. Only Nigeria, Brazil and the United States have maintained a perfect record of appearances at every edition following Germany’s failure to qualify for the 2026 tournament.
Nigeria have also come close to lifting the trophy on several occasions. The Falconets finished as runners-up in 2010 and 2014, losing both finals to Germany, while they claimed a bronze medal in 2012.
That history means expectations are always high whenever Nigeria enter the competition.
This year’s team now has an opportunity to create another memorable chapter, but the road has become considerably more difficult.
England will arrive with their own ambitions and will understand that Nigeria’s 10-1 victory has given the Falconets renewed confidence.
For Nigeria, the key will be maintaining the attacking sharpness shown against New Caledonia while correcting the defensive weaknesses identified by Aduku.
Kareem’s hat-trick and David’s three-goal contribution have given the team plenty of encouragement going forward. The challenge now is to ensure those goals are backed by a disciplined defensive performance.
The Falconets have already survived the first major hurdle of the tournament. After two disappointing results, they responded when their World Cup future was on the line.
Now comes the real test.
England stand between Nigeria and a place in the quarter-finals, and Aduku knows his players cannot afford to approach the game casually.
The 10-1 victory may have restored belief, but Thursday’s encounter will determine whether that confidence can translate into another important result.
For the Falconets, the message from their coach is straightforward. The past has been encouraging, but the knockout stage demands even more.
Nigeria have found their goals. Against England, they must now find the balance, discipline and composure needed to keep their championship dream alive.
