Blackburn Rovers coach Tony Mowbray has provided an update on the condition of Nigerian defender Ryan Alebiosu after the Super Eagles right-back was forced off at half-time during Blackburn’s 3-1 Championship victory over Millwall.

Alebiosu’s early withdrawal initially raised concerns that Blackburn could have suffered another injury setback, particularly with the defender having established himself as an important member of Mowbray’s team. However, the Blackburn coach has moved to calm those fears, explaining that the Nigerian’s problem was related to illness rather than a fresh muscular injury.

The 24-year-old started the match at Ewood Park on Saturday and delivered another encouraging performance during the opening 45 minutes. He was, however, replaced at the interval by deadline-day signing Gady Beyuku as Blackburn made changes during a match they eventually won comfortably.

Speaking after the game, Mowbray explained that Alebiosu had already been feeling unwell during the week and had not been able to complete his normal training programme before the Millwall fixture.

According to the Blackburn boss, the physical demands of playing several matches within a short period had also taken their toll on the Nigerian defender.

Mowbray said the situation appeared to be more illness than injury and suggested that the club’s medical team was monitoring the defender. The coach also revealed that tonsillitis had been suspected earlier in the week, although he stressed that he was not completely certain of the diagnosis at the time.

That clarification will come as welcome news to Blackburn supporters and Nigerian football followers who feared another injury setback for a player who has become increasingly important to the club.

Alebiosu has been one of Blackburn’s most trusted defenders since establishing himself at Ewood Park. His consistency last season helped him become a regular in the team, while his performances also earned him recognition at international level with Nigeria.

The London-born defender came through the Arsenal academy before beginning his senior career with Crewe Alexandra. He subsequently gained experience with Kilmarnock in Scotland and Belgian side Kortrijk before spending part of the 2024/25 campaign with St Mirren.

His career took another important step when he joined Blackburn Rovers in 2025. Since then, he has developed into a reliable right-back capable of contributing both defensively and going forward.

His 2025/26 campaign was particularly impressive. Alebiosu made 39 Championship appearances for Blackburn, scoring once and providing five assists. His performances helped establish him as one of the club’s dependable players and increased his profile among Nigerian football supporters. Current statistics show that he has continued to feature regularly for Blackburn at the beginning of the 2026/27 season.

The defender’s importance was also evident before the Millwall game. He had started Blackburn’s Championship fixtures and remained a preferred option for Mowbray at right-back.

His performances have also attracted attention beyond England, with his progress leading to opportunities with the Nigerian national team. Alebiosu made his Super Eagles debut during the previous international cycle and has been viewed as one of the players capable of providing additional competition at right-back.

That makes his latest health update particularly significant for Nigeria.

The Super Eagles are preparing for their opening 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau later this month. Nigeria will face Madagascar in Uyo on September 25 before travelling to play Guinea-Bissau four days later.

Nigeria coach Eric Chelle is already dealing with several fitness concerns within his squad, making the condition of every available player increasingly important ahead of the qualifiers.

For Alebiosu, the positive aspect is that Mowbray’s comments do not suggest a serious injury.

The Blackburn coach specifically indicated that he did not believe Alebiosu had suffered a muscle injury that would keep him out for an extended period. That could give both Blackburn and Nigeria hope that the defender will recover quickly once the illness has been properly assessed and treated.

The illness nevertheless highlights the physical demands placed on professional footballers during congested periods of the season. Alebiosu had already been struggling during the week and was reportedly limited to lighter recovery work and ball exercises rather than normal full training.

Despite that, he was fit enough to start against Millwall and produced another solid first-half display before the decision was made to remove him.

Blackburn went on to secure an important 3-1 victory, meaning Alebiosu could watch the second half from the sidelines without seeing his team lose control of the contest.

For now, the priority will be for the Nigerian defender to recover fully rather than rush back before he is ready.

Mowbray’s assessment provides some reassurance that the situation is manageable and that Alebiosu’s early exit was not the result of a significant new injury.

For Blackburn, his return would provide another boost to a squad already dealing with fitness problems. For Nigeria, having the defender available for the upcoming AFCON qualifiers would equally strengthen Chelle’s options.

Alebiosu has worked hard to establish himself at both club and international level, and his recent performances suggest he remains an important player for the future.

With the illness now being monitored, Nigerian supporters will be hoping the right-back makes a quick recovery and returns to action soon.
