Calvin Bassey’s impressive start to the 2026/27 season has taken another interesting turn, with the Nigerian defender reportedly attracting the attention of Italian giants Inter Milan after producing a commanding performance against Liverpool.
The Fulham captain stood out during Saturday’s Premier League meeting at Anfield, helping his side secure a valuable 0-0 draw against a Liverpool team that created opportunities but could not find a way through the visitors’ defence.
Bassey played the entire 90 minutes and was at the heart of Fulham’s resistance. The Nigerian won all three of his ground duels, made three recoveries, produced an interception and completed five clearances as Fulham held out for their first point of the campaign.
His passing was also composed under pressure, with the centre-back completing 82 per cent of his passes. His overall performance earned him the second-highest rating among Fulham players and the highest rating of the club’s defenders.
For a player who has steadily built his reputation in European football, the display was another reminder of why some of the continent’s biggest clubs are beginning to take notice.
Bassey was born in Italy to Nigerian parents before moving to England as a child. He grew up in Newham, London, and began his football development with Leicester City’s academy. Although he spent three years at Leicester without making a senior appearance, his career took a decisive turn after joining Rangers in Scotland in 2020.
At Rangers, Bassey developed into a versatile defender capable of operating both at left-back and centre-back. He helped the club win the Scottish Premiership during his first season, with Rangers completing the campaign unbeaten and conceding only 13 league goals.
His performances continued to improve, and the following season he played a major role in Rangers’ run to the Europa League final. His display against Eintracht Frankfurt in the final further enhanced his reputation, even though Rangers eventually lost on penalties after a 1-1 draw.
Ajax subsequently secured his services for an initial €23m, making him one of the most expensive defensive departures in Rangers’ history.
The move to the Netherlands gave Bassey another opportunity to test himself at a higher level. He made 39 appearances for Ajax across all competitions, scoring once and providing five assists, while also gaining valuable Champions League experience.
Fulham then brought him back to England in July 2023 in a deal reportedly worth €21m. That transfer made Bassey the most expensive Nigerian defender at the time and placed greater expectations on his shoulders in the Premier League.
Rather than being overwhelmed by the pressure, he has gradually established himself as one of Fulham’s most reliable defenders.
One of his memorable moments came in February 2024 when he scored his first goal for the club during Fulham’s 2-1 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford. The result was particularly significant because it ended Fulham’s long wait for a Premier League victory at the famous stadium.
His consistency has continued to earn recognition. Bassey was named Fulham’s Player of the Season for the 2024/25 campaign after finishing second in the previous season’s voting, while he made 30 Premier League appearances last season.
He has now made more than 100 appearances for Fulham in all competitions, becoming an increasingly important figure at Craven Cottage.
That importance has taken another step forward this season following his appointment as captain.
New Fulham manager Alvaro Arbeloa handed Bassey the captain’s armband at the beginning of the campaign, with regular skipper Tom Cairney sidelined by injury. The Nigerian has subsequently led the team in each of their opening four Premier League matches.
Bassey has embraced the responsibility, describing the opportunity to captain Fulham as a privilege.
His leadership was particularly evident at Anfield, where Fulham had to withstand sustained pressure from Liverpool. The visitors had entered the match with just three defeats from their opening three league fixtures, making the point against the defending champions an important boost.
The draw also ended a difficult opening run in which Fulham had lost 3-2 to Chelsea, 3-2 to Crystal Palace and 1-0 to Sunderland.
While one point did not immediately transform their league position, Bassey and his teammates demonstrated the defensive resilience needed to begin turning their fortunes around.
That performance has reportedly strengthened Inter Milan’s interest in the Nigerian.
The Serie A champions are said to have been monitoring Bassey across multiple transfer windows, with manager Cristian Chivu reportedly viewing the left-footed defender as a player who could fit comfortably into his tactical system.
Bassey’s versatility is one of his biggest attractions. He can operate as a conventional left-back but has increasingly established himself as a centre-back, including in systems that use three defenders.
Inter are also looking at the future of their defensive unit and could consider strengthening with younger options as some of their experienced defenders move deeper into their careers.
Bassey’s contract at Fulham currently runs until the summer of 2027, with the club holding an option to extend the agreement for another year. Fulham are reportedly considering a new long-term contract for the Nigerian, which could become important if Inter decide to turn their interest into a formal approach.
At international level, Bassey has also become an important part of the Super Eagles setup.
The defender has represented Nigeria at major tournaments and was part of the squads that won silver at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and bronze at the 2025 edition.
At 26, Bassey is entering a period of his career where his experience, versatility and leadership qualities could become even more valuable.
For now, his immediate task is to help Fulham recover from their difficult start to the Premier League season while preparing for Nigeria’s upcoming international commitments.
But after producing a composed performance against Liverpool, the spotlight around Bassey is becoming brighter.
From an academy player who struggled to break into Leicester City’s senior team to a Rangers title winner, Ajax defender, Fulham captain and established Super Eagles international, Bassey’s journey has been built on steady progress.
Now, with Inter Milan reportedly watching closely, another major chapter could be waiting for the Nigerian defender.
