On Tuesday, the Yoruba socio-cultural group Afenifere urged President Bola Tinubu to free Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of IPOB.
They voiced this demand through a communique after their general meeting, which took place at Ayo Adebanjo’s residence.
The Deputy Leader, Oba Oladipo Olaitan, presided over this important gathering.
The communique, signed by Olaitan and National Publicity Secretary Prince Justice Faloye, emphasized that Kanu’s release is essential for justice and national unity.
Afenifere expressed concerns that Kanu might not receive a fair hearing anymore due to the ongoing conflicting legal issues in various courts.
Furthermore, Afenifere labeled Kanu a political detainee and argued that there’s no valid reason for his prolonged detention without trial.
They stated, “Given all circumstances, especially his abduction in 2021 and subsequent controversial legal battles, it’s evident Kanu is a political detainee.”
In light of justice and reconciliation, Afenifere strongly urged President Tinubu to release Kanu immediately, emphasizing that continuing his detention is unjustifiable.
Additionally, the meeting confirmed the appointment of Dele Farotimi as Afenifere’s new National Organising Secretary.
The General Meeting approved Barrister Dele Farotimi’s appointment, recognizing his potential contributions to the organization.
Moreover, addressing the nation’s insecurity, Afenifere reiterated the need for state police.
They pointed out that, considering Nigeria’s vast size and population, a single unitary police force can’t secure the country effectively.
