Air Peace, Nigeria’s leading airline, has officially launched its direct flight service from Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, to London Heathrow Airport, further bolstering its international operations.
The inaugural flight, which departed on Sunday, marks a significant milestone for the airline, following the successful launch of its Lagos–London route in March 2024.
Air Peace CEO Allen Onyema praised the government’s proactive support, attributing the achievement to its responsiveness to the needs of local airlines.
He highlighted the swift removal of a 4% FOB charge on aviation imports by the Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, as an example of the administration’s commitment to fostering a more business-friendly environment for Nigerian carriers.
Onyema described the launch as a celebration of patriotism and a testament to the government’s dedication to empowering local operators.
Festus Keyamo, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, emphasized President Bola Tinubu’s directive to strengthen Nigerian airlines and create a more competitive aviation sector.
He noted that over the past four decades, more than 100 airlines have collapsed, underscoring the need for reforms to support local carriers.
Keyamo also highlighted the longstanding dominance of foreign airlines on Nigerian routes, despite the country having reciprocal rights under bilateral air services agreements.
He affirmed the ministry’s commitment to enhancing the capacity of Nigerian airlines to fully utilize these rights and compete effectively on international routes.
This new Abuja–London service not only provides greater connectivity between Nigeria and the UK but also represents a step forward in leveling the playing field for local airlines in the global aviation market.
