The men’s Federation Cup competition had a new winner on Sunday when Akwa United edged 2003 champions Lobi Stars 2-1 at the Teslim Balogun Stadium to claim the glittering trophy.

Two excellent set pieces by Namso Edo and Awakan Abdulafeez assured victory for the Akwa boys, who were cheered by a large contingent that included Governor Udom Emmanuel and former Governor Godswill Akpabio.

Governors Samuel Ortom and Simon Lalong of Benue and Plateau States respectively were also there, alongside Deputy Governor Oluranti Adebule of Lagos State.

NFF President Amaju Pinnick, NFF vice presidents Seyi Akinwunmi and Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the Lagos State Sports Commission Deji Tinubu, DG of Lagos State Sports Commission Ayodele Agbesanwa and Members of the NFF Executive Committee and Management also glorified the occasion.

Sunshine Queens and Bayelsa Queens fought themselves to a stalemate in the women’s final, both settling for a 1-1 draw in regulaton time.

The Akure girls won 5-4 on penalties to claim the diadem.

Awakan Abdulafeez of Akwa United was selected the Most Valuable Player of the men’s competition, for which another Akwa player, Ubong Friday emerged the top scorer with six goals.

Sunshine Queens also swept the honours in the women’s category, with Patience Kalu the Most Valuable Player and Tina Oyatheleme the top scorer with three goals.
