Amnesty Int’l remembers how Fela was declared Prisoner Of Conscience in 1985

Amnesty International Nigeria has recalled how the late Fela Anikulapo Kuti was declared a Prisoner Of Conscience in 1985.

The human rights body disclosed this on its Twitter handle, @AmnestyNigeria, late Thursday.

It tweeted:

“In 1985 Amnesty International declared Fela Kuti a Prisoner Of Conscience. Fela Kuti was widely known as a critic of Nigeria’s military governments and a number of his songs included strong political messaging against oppression and corruption.”

Amnesty also recalled how in 1977 his house was burned down by unknown soldiers, killing his mother and injuring others.

It noted: “In 1977 his house was burned down and members of his family seriously injured when several hundred soldiers arrested him at his home.

“His numerous arrests by Nigerian government were aimed at musically silencing him for his anti-autocratic compositions.” Read more.
