The Anambra State House of Assembly has on Tuesday called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to positively consider the immediate conduct of the Anambra Central Senatorial rerun election.

The Assembly noted that the successful conduct of the election would give the people of the senatorial district a voice in the nation’s Upper legislative chambers.

The rerun has lingered for nearly two years following protracted litigation.

The motion calling for the rerun was unanimously supported by members, following a motion by Hon Chigbo Enwezor, representing Onitsha North 1 State constituency.

The members said people of the senatorial zone had been subjected to undue denials due to the continued vacancy of the seat since the removal of Senator Uche Ekwunife in December 2015 by the court of Appeal, Enugu division.

This consequently sparked off chains of litigations till date.

According to Enwezor who moved the motion during plenary said “the situation is no longer funny as it will be two years soon, yet Anambra central is still being denied a senator”.

Also Mr Obinna Emenaka(Anambra East)said there was need to conduct the election as matters concerning the state would no longer be effectively handled by only two senators.

The incumbent Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, who was the candidate of the All Progressives Congress in the 2015 general elections had recently attributed the delay for the conduct of the election to pending litigations at various courts.

Chief Victor Umeh, a former national chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance and candidate of the party in the election had sharply disagreed with Ngige, saying that the Supreme Court judgment of January  10,2017 had removed every impediment delaying the rerun.
