Anambra Poll: Ohaneze Begs Aspirants To Step Down For Anambra North

The President of Ohaneze Ndigbo, Anambra State chapter, Ichie Damian Okeke has appealed to aspirants from other zones to step down for Anambra North zone in the upcoming state governorship election.
Ichie Okeke made the appeal during a press conference where he delivered a speech titled “Zoning: Panacea To Political Instability, Cash-And- Carry Politics And Retarded Development In Anambra State”.
Okeke said that very extensive consultations were made with the critical stake-holders and they all agreed that Anambra North should complete their turn.
He said: “We interfaced with the traditional rulers, Presidents-general of town unions and members of their respective Executives and other stake-holders at the Senatorial district levels.
“We also later met the traditional rulers at their state level during which the chairman of the state Council of Traditional Rulers, His Royal Majesty ( HRM) Nnaemeka Achebe (Obi of Onitsha) presided over the meeting.
“Other stake-holders consulted included the various Town Union Executives, including the Women Wing of the Town Union, youth leaders.
“We also met with some elder statesmen, including former Vice-president, Dr. Alex Ekwueme, first civilian governor of our state, Dr. Chukwuemeka Ezeife, among a host of others.”
He stated that “aggregate opinions prescribed that for us to enthrone a stable polity, reduce rancour, mutual suspicion, reduce cost of campaigns for elective political offices, and begin to enjoy good governance, we must adopt a zoning formula for critical elective and appointive political offices.”
According to him, “it was recommended that the Governorship seat should be occupied on rotational zonal basis.
“And every zone occupying the seat should be allowed to it retain for eight-year consecutive period before it should rotate to the next senatorial zone.
“It was further recommended that during each tenure, the offices of the Governor, Deputy governor and Speaker of the State House of Assembly should be distributed among the three senatorial districts.
“Based on the foregoing therefore, the leadership of Ohaneze Ndigbo, Anambra state chapter has resolved that since the North-senatorial zone is currently occupying the position, the zone should be allowed to produce the next governor of the state during the forthcoming Gubernatorial election fixed for November 18, this year.
“This is to enable the zone complete its eight- year uninterrupted tenure as recommended here.”
The Anambra Ohaneze, therefore, appealed to all political parties and Anambrarians to adopt this zonal arrangements as a permanent policy of zoning system for our dear state.
It also urged all the political parties contesting in the forthcoming governorship election to embrace this zonal initiative by choosing their respective candidates for the election from the North senatorial zone.
It, therefore, solicited the support of all Anambrarians, especially the electorate to suport this zoning arrangement at all election henceforth.
Based on this popularly adopted zoning arrangement after the North senatorial zone, the Governorship slot will be zoned to the South senatorial district which will also retain the seat for 8 years consecutive period.
Thereafter, the Central Senatorial district will also occupy the position for the same period.
Based on the foregoing, Ohaneze presented that succession to the Governorship seat of Anambra state should be as follows:
Anambra North 2013 – 2012 (8 years uninterrupted)
Anambra South 2021 – 2029 ( 8 years uninterrupted)
Anambra Central 2029 – 2037 ( 8 years uninterrupted)
Anambra North 2037 – 2045 ( 8 years uninterrupted)
Anambra South 2045 – 2053 ( 8 years uninterrupted)
He stated that former Vice- President Alex Ekwueme has thrown his weight behind zoning of political offices as being recommended here.
He also stated that Dr. Ezeife also supported zoning system to be adopted as it concerns distribution of key elective and appointive political offices.
According to him “A political entity performs best in the atmosphere of peace and unity, which are generated by equity, justice and fairness.”
In conclusion, he pointed out at that this zoning arrangement has already been adopted by virtually all other Igbo states.
He, once more, appealed to all to sustain the commitment in order to build a more united and prosperous Igbo nation, and Nigeria at large.
