As preparations for the #AnambraDecides2025 election got underway on Saturday morning, some youths in Awka 2, Ward 6 turned a nearby open field into a football pitch while election officials arranged materials for the day’s voting.

In the viral video, INEC officials were seen setting up polling booths and sorting election materials when the youths began their match, drawing the attention of curious onlookers and early voters waiting nearby.

The lively scene unfolded just a few metres away from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) polling units in Awka, the Anambra State capital.

Independent Monitors says that the atmosphere remained calm and peaceful as residents gradually arrived at polling centres to participate in the election.

Photos captured showed young men in sportswear kicking footballs near the voting area while some voters watched from a distance.

The match reportedly continued even as INEC officials finalized their setup.

Observers said the situation highlighted a mix of excitement and indifference among young voters, many of whom expressed skepticism about the electoral process.

Some voters, however, saw the football game as a light-hearted moment before the day’s serious political exercise began.

The Anambra governorship election, which features 16 candidates from 16 political parties, will determine whether incumbent Governor Chukwuma Soludo of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) retains his seat or is replaced by a new challenger.

Security agents were present around the polling area, ensuring order while maintaining a relaxed atmosphere.

Diaspora Digital Media reported that voting officially began in the morning across several parts of the state, according to INEC updates shared on its verified social media handles.

Despite the early casual mood, election observers have raised concerns about low voter turnout and mild apathy among residents, particularly the youth, who make up a large portion of registered voters in the state.

The #AnambraDecides2025 poll is being closely monitored by both local and international observers, as it is seen as a crucial test of Nigeria’s electoral credibility ahead of upcoming regional elections.
