A transformative chapter unfolds in Nigeria’s energy landscape as the Assa North-Ohaji South (ANOH) Gas Processing Plant launches full-scale production, delivering a remarkable 850 million standard cubic feet of gas per day.
This milestone not only cements ANOH’s status as Nigeria’s largest gas facility but also propels Imo State to the forefront of industrialization, energy security, and environmental sustainability.
Nestled in the resource-rich Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area and within the expansive Orashi Special Energy Free Trade Zone (OSEFTZ), the $850 million ANOH plant is a joint venture between the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) and Seplat Energy Plc.
This landmark project embodies the Federal Government’s “Decade of Gas” initiative, which aims to unlock Nigeria’s vast gas reserves for economic growth, reduction of gas flaring, and expansion of cleaner energy options.
Speaking during a recent courtesy visit from the ANOH Gas Processing Company (AGPC) management, led by Managing Director Mr. Effiong Okon, Governor Hope Uzodimma lauded the project as a catalyst for Imo State’s prosperity and stability.
“Imo is open for business, and we will ensure a win-win partnership for sustainable growth,” the governor declared.
He emphasized that the plant’s operations would not only fuel domestic industries but also power the 380MW Egbema Power Plant, which uses advanced GE turbines and requires a consistent gas supply.
“ANOH means we will be among the pioneer clients for steady electricity, reducing dependence on the unreliable national grid,” Uzodimma added.
Currently processing 300 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD) in its initial phase—with expansion plans to double capacity—ANOH is set to fuel a diverse array of projects within OSEFTZ.
These include petrochemical plants, mini-LNG facilities, a proposed 100,000-barrel-per-day refinery, and expanded LPG distribution to replace polluting fuels in households.
Additionally, plans for methanol production using cutting-edge carbon-capture technology will position Imo State as a pioneer in clean energy.
Governor Uzodimma also highlighted how investments like ANOH are restoring peace and creating opportunities in regions once marked by unrest.
The project is expected to generate thousands of direct and indirect jobs, with comprehensive skills training for local youth as part of AGPC’s robust corporate social responsibility (CSR) framework.
“This region was once plagued by unrest, but job creation and economic opportunities are restoring peace,” he noted.
Infrastructure development around the Orashi Free Trade Zone—which spans Oguta, Ohaji/Egbema, and Ngor Okpala LGAs—is gaining momentum, with key projects such as the dredging of Oguta Lake and Orashi River to enable maritime access for gas evacuation and cargo movement.
This aligns with Governor Uzodimma’s 2025 budget, which allocates N807 billion (with 86% dedicated to capital projects) to accelerate industrial and infrastructural growth across Imo State.
With ANOH’s commissioning, Nigeria signals its commitment to energy independence, economic diversification, and environmental responsibility.
As production scales up, Assah in Imo State is emerging as the epicenter of Nigeria’s gas revolution, poised to attract global attention and investments.
The ANOH Gas Plant stands not just as an industrial marvel but as a beacon of Imo State’s renewed promise—where energy meets opportunity and peace fosters prosperity.
