Ardo clarifies position on opposition coalition, advocates for new political party

Umar Ardo, Convener of the League of Northern Democrats, addressed concerns about the proposed coalition to challenge the APC.

He acknowledged internal disagreements but insisted the coalition remains committed to offering a credible alternative to President Bola Tinubu’s government, Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) reports.

According to Ardo, the main issue is whether to adopt an existing platform or register a new political party.

He supports creating a new party, arguing it would increase the coalition’s chances of success in upcoming elections.

“The coalition is in place but divided on the basis of approach,” he explained during an interview with reporters.

He said unity around a new party would demonstrate seriousness and create a stronger appeal to the Nigerian electorate.

Ardo emphasized that sacrifices must be made to provide Nigerians with a credible political platform that reflects their hopes.

He cited voter apathy in past elections, with less than 38% turnout, as evidence of public disillusionment with current options.

“The vast majority of Nigerians want to participate,” he noted, “but the platforms available do not reflect their aspirations.”

He dismissed accusations that the coalition is just a regrouping of politicians who lost influence and are seeking relevance.

“I have never been a member of the APC, not for a single day,” Ardo clarified, rejecting any link to the ruling party.

He noted his consistent criticism of the APC from the beginning, calling for reform long before this new movement emerged.

Analysts have compared the proposed coalition to the APC’s origin as a merger of politically diverse and conflicting groups.

Critics warn that this new effort might suffer the same fate if lessons from APC’s internal conflicts are not applied.

Ardo responded by stating that history must guide the future if the coalition is to avoid the APC’s mistakes.

“To stop history from repeating itself, you must learn from it,” he said, calling for strategic foresight and discipline.

According to him, APC’s failure was not due to the merger itself, but what followed after power was won.

He claimed that those who led the APC did not understand the mission and abandoned the shared vision for Nigeria.

“Many of us who helped form the coalition were later sidelined,” he said, pointing to betrayal after victory.

Ardo insisted the new movement should be different, principled, focused, and committed to national progress, not personal gain or ego.

“Politicians have interests, yes,” he admitted, “but we must confront the real issues, corruption, insecurity, and economic decline.”

He maintained that a united coalition with clear goals can resolve these problems and rebuild trust in the political system.

In conclusion, Ardo called for unity, patience, and focus to challenge the ruling party with a credible and viable alternative.

“Your intention was genuine, was good,” he said. “We removed incumbency before; we can do it again with the right approach.”
