Argentine President Javier Milei has described the United Nations as a “useless organisation,” accusing the global body of failing to guarantee collective security and protect human rights.
Speaking at the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York on Wednesday, Milei said the UN had instead allowed “chaos, violence and international terrorism” to flourish.
He accused the organisation of serving “arrogant parasites disguised as well-intentioned bureaucrats” and alleged that it had failed to act on Argentina’s claim to the Falkland Islands, known as the Malvinas in Argentina.
Argentina has long disputed Britain’s control of the islands, with the two countries going to war over the territory in 1982.
Milei also criticised what he described as the UN’s failure to enforce its rules, saying countries that obey international rules often receive no reward while those that violate them face little or no consequences.
His remarks came as Argentina and the United States announced a joint initiative aimed at improving Argentina’s infrastructure and linking key economic sectors to major Atlantic ports and Western markets.
The initiative, known as the Andes-Atlantic Corridor, is expected to support investment in transport, digital infrastructure, minerals and energy, including the Vaca Muerta hydrocarbon deposit in southern Argentina.
