ARISE News Anchor Dies After Robbery in Abuja Home

Tragedy struck on Monday as ARISE News Channel lost one of its young anchors, Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, who was killed during an armed robbery at her residence in Katampe District, Abuja.

The 29-year-old journalist, fondly called Sommie by colleagues and friends, passed away in the early hours of September 29, 2025.

Her death was confirmed in a statement issued by Hadiza Usman-Ajayi on behalf of the ARISE News management.

According to the statement, the Nigeria Police Force has already launched an investigation into the incident.

In its tribute, ARISE News described Sommie as more than a journalist. She was a lawyer by training, a professional broadcaster, and a supportive colleague known for her warmth and dedication.

“It is with heavy hearts that the management and staff of ARISE News Channel announce the passing of our beloved colleague, News Anchor, Reporter and Producer, Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu.

Sommie tragically passed away in the early hours of Monday following an armed robbery incident at her residence in Katampe area of Abuja that is being investigated by the Nigeria Police,” the statement read.

The channel highlighted her vibrant on-air presence, noting how she connected with viewers through her reporting.

ARISE extended its condolences to her parents, siblings, extended family, and friends, describing her as “a cherished member of the ARISE News family” whose voice may be gone but whose legacy will live on.

“We remain in shock and call for a speedy investigation, apprehension, and prosecution of the culprits,” the management stressed.

Maduagwu’s death has left colleagues, viewers, and Nigeria’s media industry in mourning.

She had built a reputation as one of the promising young voices in journalism before her life was cut short.

Her passing adds to growing concerns over insecurity in the nation’s capital, where armed robbery and violent attacks have continued to unsettle residents.
