Suspected Boko Haram terrorists have carried out multiple suicide bomb attacks in Maiduguri, Borno State, targeting crowded public areas during the evening Iftar period.

The Operation HADIN KAI, the military task force in Nigeria’s North-East, confirmed that the explosions occurred at about 7:05 p.m. on Monday within the Maiduguri Metropolitan Council.

According to a statement by the task force, the attacks were carried out by suicide bombers who detonated explosives in busy locations as residents were breaking their fast.

The military described the incident as a “cowardly attack” aimed at causing mass casualties and spreading panic across the city.

Troops of Operation HADIN KAI, working alongside the Nigeria Police Force Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit and other security agencies, responded quickly to the blasts.

Security operatives immediately cordoned off affected areas to prevent further explosions and ensure public safety.

Emergency response teams, including the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), evacuated victims to nearby hospitals for urgent medical care.

The injured were taken to facilities such as the General Hospital, Specialist Hospital, and the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.

Medical personnel are currently treating victims, while rescue operations continue at the scene of the attacks.

Preliminary findings suggest that the attackers may have deployed multiple suicide bombers into Maiduguri as part of a coordinated plan to strike several crowded locations.

Security forces have since intensified surveillance, patrols and counter-IED operations across the metropolis to locate any remaining suspects and prevent further attacks.

The latest incident underscores ongoing security challenges in Nigeria’s North-East region, despite sustained military operations against insurgent groups.
