ASUU boss seeks return of IDPs over alarming teenage pregnancy at camps

The President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to ensure a speedy return of the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) who were displaced from their homes as a result of attacks by Fulani herdsmen.

Prof. Osodeke made the call during a visit of Benue State IDPs’ camps where he witnessed hundreds of out-of-school children, as well as countless pregnant teenagers.

ASUU had carried out humanitarian outreach to IDP camps at the Abagana in Makurdi, the state capital, where they brought food and clothing items to the displaced persons.

Osodeke, who was represented by ASUU officials, Professors Ralph Ofokwu and Stellamarris Okey, described as alarming the spate of teenage pregnancy at the camps.

He asked the Federal Government to do better now that Nigerians are facing unprecedented hardship.

The ASSU officials lamented the inability to safely return the IDPs to their villages and homes now being occupied by armed herdsmen.

On their part, leaders of the displaced persons expressed heartfelt desire to return home if the governments would provide security personnel to clear armed herdsmen from their homesteads.

The officials of the state emergency management agency assured the ASUU officials of transparency in sharing the items for the IDPs.

IDPs camps were set up were set up in Benue State after residents were forced to flee their homes after killer herdsmen attacked Logo and Guma local government areas.

Other parts of the state have been also adversely affected including Agatu Local Government. Read more.
