ASUU strike: Orji Uzor Kalu foundation has spent N300m assisting lecturers — Sen. Kalu

Former Abia State governor and Chief Whip of the Senate, Dr Orji Uzor Kalu, has revealed that since the Academic Staff Union of Universities commenced their indefinite strike six months ago, his foundation ( Orji Uzor Kalu foundation) has spent over 300 million naira assisting lecturers across the country.

Kalu disclosed this in a statement which was made available to News Band. The Abia North lawmaker has been among the vocal individuals calling for a truce between the federal government and striking lecturers.

Senator Kalu in the statement, however appealed to the Federal Government to reconsider their stance and reach an agreement that will lead to the end of the six months strike for the sake of students who may lose interest in education if the strike should linger.

He said, “For the sake of the lecturers who have no other source of income but salaries earned. For the sake of the undergraduates who may lose interest in education should the strike not end soon. I appeal to the Federal Government to reconsider their stance and make a deal that would lead to the end of the ASUU strike .

“The consequences of the strike are also financially draining for many of us. Orji Uzor Kalu Foundation management just informed me how the foundation has spent over N300 million on our ASUU friends across the country.

“There are global economic challenges and Nigeria is not an exemption but the Federal Government must prioritize the ASUU issues and call off the strike no matter the price.”
