The Independent National Electoral Commission [INEC] has assured that the Academic Staff Union of Universities [ASUU] will participate in the forthcoming 2019 general elections in February.
INEC chairman, Prof Mahmood Yakubu broke the news on Friday on the electoral body’s Twitter page.
The agreement was reached at a meeting between INEC and officials of the union in Abuja.
The INEC chairman, had on Thursday raised concern that the bulk of critical election duty staff are drawn from the universities.
“We are determined to ensure that (election) processes are not affected by the union’s industrial action.
“ASUU is a critical partner to the commission in delivering credible elections,” he had said.
He said that the educational body has agreed to participate in the election as hoped.

ElombahNews had reported earlier in the day that INEC will meet ASUU and the Nigeria Labour Congress [NLC] over the matter.
Prof. Yakubu did not mention if NLC will also partake as expected.
