In a major political shakeup, former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, has formally resigned from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), a party he helped found and represented in two presidential elections.

Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathered that the resignation was officially conveyed in a letter dated July 14, 2025, and addressed to the PDP Chairman of Jada 1 Ward, Jada Local Government Area, Adamawa State.

The letter, written on Atiku’s personal letterhead and signed by him, stated that his resignation was with immediate effect.

Atiku Abubakar, who served as Nigeria’s Vice President from 1999 to 2007 under the PDP administration of President Olusegun Obasanjo, expressed deep gratitude to the party for what he described as some of the most significant opportunities of his political life.

He described his two full terms as Vice President and his two-time emergence as a presidential candidate under the PDP banner as “significant chapters” in his political journey.

“It is indeed heartbreaking for me to make this decision,” Atiku wrote, adding that despite his deep ties to the PDP, he found it necessary to part ways due to what he termed “the current trajectory the party has taken,” which, according to him, “diverges from the foundational principles we stood for.”

The letter, which has now gone viral online, shows Atiku lamenting what he describes as “irreconcilable differences” between himself and the present direction of the party.

He stated clearly that his resignation stemmed from a fundamental departure from the values upon which the PDP was built.

The letter was received and acknowledged on the same day by one Hammoodama Abubakar.

This resignation marks a turning point in Nigeria’s political scene.

Atiku Abubakar has been one of the most prominent faces in the PDP since its inception in 1998.

His political journey has been characterized by consistency in party politics, even though he briefly left the PDP in the past to pursue ambitions elsewhere.

Observers believe this new development could reshape the 2027 political landscape, especially as speculations grow about Atiku’s next political move.

Some analysts say his decision to exit the PDP at this crucial time could either signal his retirement or the formation of a new political alliance.

As the nation begins to digest the implications of Atiku’s departure, reactions have begun to pour in from both supporters and critics of the PDP.

While some sympathize with his grievances about the party losing its ideological path, others accuse him of jumping ship for personal ambitions.

Nonetheless, Atiku’s resignation is a signal of potential instability within the PDP ahead of the next general elections.

Whether it prompts internal reforms within the party or leads to broader political realignments remains to be seen.

For now, one thing is clear, one of PDP’s most iconic founding fathers has turned the page on a political chapter that once defined Nigeria’s democratic journey.
