Atiku Issues Stern Warning to Edo Governor Over Threat to Peter Obi

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has issued a firm warning to Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State.

He stated clearly that any threat to Peter Obi amounts to a threat to every Nigerian.

Atiku shared his reaction on Tuesday, July 22, via his verified X handle formerly Twitter.

He responded shortly after Governor Okpebholo accused Obi of causing violence during a recent visit to Benin City.

Moreover, the governor declared that Obi must now get clearance before stepping into Edo again.

The governor made the statement during an APC rally. The event celebrated the defection of House of Reps member Marcus Onobun from the PDP.

Peter Obi, who leads the Labour Party, had recently visited Benin City. During the visit, he donated ₦15 million to the School of Nursing Sciences at St. Philomena Hospital.

Additionally, he pledged to support further development at the institution.

However, Governor Okpebholo expressed outrage. He accused Obi of triggering political unrest and blamed him for the deaths of three people.

“That man who says he has no ‘shishi’ came and dropped ₦15 million,” the governor said.

“Where did he get it from? After he left, three people were killed. He must not enter Edo without clearance.”

As expected, the remarks stirred outrage across social media. Nigerians swiftly condemned the statement as inflammatory and irresponsible.

In response, Atiku fired back in a strongly worded tweet.

“Let it be known that a threat to Peter Obi or any of us is a threat to ALL of us,” Atiku said.

As a result, several political observers called on the APC leadership to caution its governor. Others warned that such comments could endanger democracy.

Civil society groups also weighed in. They argued that Okpebholo’s comments promote political violence and suppress opposition.

Importantly, this incident seems to have reignited a growing alliance between Obi and Atiku. Both men recently stood together to criticize President Tinubu’s leadership on June 12.

Now, this Edo confrontation adds more fuel to their shared opposition narrative.

Clearly, many believe that Tinubu’s allies are attempting to silence political rivals ahead of 2027.

However, Atiku’s swift response shows that opposition voices are ready to resist intimidation.

For now, Nigerians are watching closely. The incident could shape future political alliances and campaign strategies.
