Atiku, Lamido, Secondus, others meet in Abuja for 2027 coalition talks

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar held a high-level meeting on Tuesday with several prominent leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abuja.
The closed-door gathering is believed to be part of ongoing efforts to form a political coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) can confirm that the meeting took place at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, one of Abuja’s key political convergence points.
Atiku, a two-time presidential candidate of the PDP, was joined by key figures within the party structure, including former PDP National Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus.
Among the notable participants in the meeting were a former Senate President, David Mark, and former Jigawa State governor, Sule Lamido.
The gathering also featured former governors Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State, Liyel Imoke of Cross River, Babangida Aliyu of Niger State, and Sam Egwu of Ebonyi State.
According to sources close to the meeting, the objective was to deepen consultations on the formation of a broad based political coalition that would serve as a strategic platform for unseating the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the next election cycle.
This latest move is seen as a significant step in galvanizing opposition forces ahead of 2027, particularly as the PDP continues to recover from internal divisions that marred its performance in the 2023 general elections.
The idea of a coalition has been gaining traction in recent months amid increasing dissatisfaction with the economic and security performance of the APC-led federal government.
Political observers say the timing of the meeting and the calibre of leaders present suggest that a more formal alliance may soon be announced.
Although details of the discussions were not made public, party insiders hinted that the group deliberated on the framework for a united opposition platform, modalities for candidate selection, and strategies for engaging civil society and grassroots movements.
One of the sources told DDM, “It is not just about the PDP anymore.
There is a growing consensus that to defeat the APC, we must go beyond party lines and forge a credible, formidable national platform.”
The coalition talks come against the backdrop of other political realignments currently brewing across the country.
Several stakeholders within and outside the PDP have been advocating for a merger or partnership among opposition parties, citing the need to rescue Nigeria from what they describe as “economic hardship, policy inconsistency, and authoritarian drift.”
Atiku, who remains one of the most experienced politicians in Nigeria’s democratic landscape, is believed to be at the center of these realignment efforts.
Analysts believe that his role may not necessarily be to contest again but to serve as a rallying figure for the opposition’s unity.
Also speaking with DDM, a PDP official who asked not to be named noted, “What’s happening here is the groundwork. These are political generals mapping out a comeback strategy.”
The meeting in Abuja is expected to be followed by further consultations with other stakeholders, including state governors, party chairmen, and leaders of civil society groups.
With the 2027 elections still over a year away, the groundwork being laid by opposition leaders is being closely watched by political observers.
Whether the coalition will gain nationwide traction remains to be seen, but insiders say the momentum is building.
