Atiku-Obi or Atiku-Amaechi ticket could defeat Tinubu in 2027 — Momodu

Dele Momodu, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has said a strong opposition coalition featuring Atiku Abubakar and a prominent southern politician, such as Peter Obi or Rotimi Amaechi, could potentially unseat President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general election.

While speaking on Sunday Politics of Channels Television, Momodu said such a coalition could bring an end to Tinubu’s presidency, though not necessarily the APC itself.

He argued that Atiku’s long-standing political ambition and experience make him a formidable contender if he becomes the opposition candidate.

He added that many Nigerians who were previously indifferent to Atiku are beginning to view him more positively due to the current political climate.

Drawing a comparison with Donald Trump, Momodu said persistence in politics can eventually pay off, citing how Trump returned to office despite earlier doubts about his chances.

Momodu also stressed the importance of a vibrant opposition in a democratic system, warning that the current wave of defections from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC since Tinubu assumed office poses a threat to Nigeria’s democracy.

According to him, it would be dangerous if the PDP were reduced to only a few governors.

Atiku, Obi, and Amaechi—who contested the 2023 presidential election under different political parties—are now aligned with the ADC as part of a coalition seeking to challenge the APC in 2027.

The alliance also includes prominent figures such as David Mark, Rauf Aregbesola, and Nasir El-Rufai.

The ADC has scheduled its national convention for April 14, 2026, while ward and state congresses are expected to begin on April 7, 2026, as the party prepares to strengthen its coalition ahead of the next general election
